Leopoldskron Pool

When Jess and I were standing at the very top of the fortress walls when we previously visited the Castle, we were looking out at the view and Jess was very excited about the colourful slides and pool she could see far off in the distance. When I asked a castle staff attendant she explained what I heard as “leprechaun pool” so when we researched where that fab pool might be we found out it is called Leopoldskron Pool.

I was working Saturday until 1pm and then we made plans to head to the pool. The kids were actually looking forward to it and the weather was divine at 31 degrees.

It was the first day since being in Salzburg we were in shorts and singlets. As soon as we headed out the air was so warm and the vibe was of summer. On our walk to the bus stop at Aldstadt everywhere you looked people were eating ice creams, or drinking fabulous cocktails with straws, everyone was dressed in colourful summer clothes and there was an explosion of people, the most I have seen since being here.

I had worked out that we needed to catch the 11 bus and it would take us direct to the pool. Once we got to the bus stop and looked at the time table I noted there was no 11 bus at our bus stop.. Secondly the 11 bus did not go to the pool.

I blame chatgpt as I solely took the instructions from my mate chat who is generally pretty good with correct information but perhaps I will also go back to my old pal Google in future.

Ben then took over and worked out we needed to catch the 21 or 23 bus. We only needed to walk up to the next bus stop and then jumped on the 21 bus but we should have caught the 23 as this would have taken us direct. The bus driver didn’t speak a word of English and even though we tried to purchase a ticket through our amazing German skills it was to no avail so off we went on the bus for free. We needed to include a 10 minute walk and we eventually got to our destination very hot and ready to jump in the pool.

From first impression the public pool was more like a fun park, there were slides, 3 jumping boards, a mini putt putt golf course, table tennis tables set up, pool tables set up under cover and colourful beach umbrellas and sun loungers everywhere. We set our things up, found a locker to lock away our belongings for a euro and set off for the diving boards.

There are 4 pools and they are all crystal clear and so clean and every pool is stainless steel, no peeling paint, no pebbles just smooth steel. The water was a shock as we got in as it was quite cold but of course once we were swimming around it was really pleasant. The three diving boards were all open and being supervised if anyone wanted to jump off and Daniel and Ben immediately ran off to join the line and they both had fun jumping off the 4m board. Jess and I were enjoying ourselves swimming around in the pool and trying to touch the bottom (as the pool was incredibly deep), but most of the swimmers were just ‘standers’ as all around the pool is a standing ledge and everyone was just standing and chatting. There were also starting blocks on both ends that the kids were diving and doing tricks off. It was a very active pool.

We spent the day going between the slides, the large pool and even tried out what I would call is the “social pool” which was shallow and everyone was just wading and chatting away and there was a climbing spiders web frame and a ‘spa’ bubble section.

It was such an enjoyable day and when it was 5pm it was still 28 degrees so we stayed for another hour as the pool closing hours wasn’t until 7pm.. We then left on the 23 bus which took us all the way to Aldstadt and then walked back to the apartment and grabbed pizza and salad on the way for dinner.
