Salzburg Beautiful Salzburg We are Here
Touch down in Salzburg! We have arrived and it feels so surreal but wonderful at the same time. I had butterflies when we were going through the immigration check point thinking I would have to go through a different process than Ben and the kids but it was effortless and we were all given the clear and walked on through to the departure lounge. Once we had collected all our bags there was a lovely driver waiting with our Seidler Family sign ready to collect us. The Mercedes van was perfect and once the kids had a laugh over the driver being on the wrong side of the car we headed off for Schallmooser Hauptstrabe to our apartment. The driver was so kind of us to let us use his phone to call Hans the lessor who was meeting us at the apartment and he answered (phew) and he was already at the apartment.
Driving through the city was just absolutely pictureresque, the cobblestone features, the baroque architecture, adorable cafes and so much greenery.
It was only an 18 minute drive and we arrived at our apartment. We were greeted by a very friendly Hannes who walked us through the details of the apartment including the wifi and the use of the equipment but I was too distracted with how cute and fantastic the apartment was. It is a 4 room apartment with high ceilings making the rooms look huge. The apartment opens onto a hallway with the lounge room off the right and bathroom to the left. Another room further down the hallway is the kitchen with all the modern appliances with a colour scheme of black and white and then further down the hallway are the 2 bedrooms.
When we were selecting the apartment we were dubious to pick one that only had 2 bedrooms as Daniel would need to sleep in the lounge room. When we entered the apartment and he had a look around he was quite upset and felt very left out because he did not have his own room. This made me feel sad and guilty and I wanted to find a solution to make sure he didn’t feel this way. The loungeroom has a large door that closes off the room and I explained to Daniel that this is his room, if anyone needs to come in ie to watch tv that we need to knock before we can enter. I also said to him that the next apartment we move into (after 45 days) he can pick the best bedroom and he can help pick the apartment that he likes. He was happy with this solution and has slept in the room for one night and he said it is very comfortable and he likes this solution. He gets the tv, the lounge room, has his computer set up for gaming so really it is his own entertainment space. I am still not convinced that Ben and my original decision to only get a 2 bedroom apartment to save money was the best idea but now we are trying to make it work so everyone is happy.
Wifi was easy to set up, bags were semi unpacked and then we decided to get some dinner. It was 5pm Austrian time but it felt like 1am as we had barely gotten any sleep on the plane but we thought it was no time like the present to try and acclimatise our bodies to Austrian time so lets eat and make our bodies believe it is dinner time.
We couldn’t be in a better area, it is spectacular. There are the cutest shops just 100m down the road including bakeries, florists, clothing stores, spa, DM, a plethora of pizza shops and Italian seems to be very prominent every alleyway. There is so much to choose from and little winding alleyways leading in all directions.
I picked our first restaurant as it had a big red umbrella (just like the photos I had seen). Seriously it wasn’t because of the menu, we didn’t even read it, I just wanted to sit under the umbrella with the red tablecloths and red blankets and serene atmosphere to eat. We had only been seated for 2 minuts until we were greeted with a very very very loud ringing of the bells. Jessy asked “do these ring every hour” and “I said yes” so we listed for several minutes with Jessy then saying “do they ring all hour for the whole hour” as they seemed to go on forever and we were all laughing thinking how annoying that could be.
Dinner was not fun! It was delicious but not fun! Daniel was falling asleep at the table and could barely eat. He ordered a margarita pizza and had one slice then came and sat with me and ended up lying down with his head on my lap while I was eating my….yes you guessed it Schnitzel and salad. Jessy also ordered a pizza and she was also very tired but managed to stay awake during the meal. Ben also ordered a wiener schnitzel and salad and was reminiscing of how it reminded him of the schnitzel his Oma used to make him. I thoroughly enjoyed my schnitzel but would have loved some gravy, but this is how the Austrians eat theirs with lemon and cranberry sauce.
Once we were finished we walked back to the apartment 2 minutes away and Jessy, myself and Daniel snuggled into our beds and Ben went out for a walk to explore the area.
