Salzburg Christmas Markets 2025

It’s Christmas and everywhere you look are lights, decorations, Christmas trees set up outside and the markets have started.

There are markets at Mirrabell Gardens and then the main markets are at old town.

I wasn’t expecting so many adorable stalls all set up so well with decorations, hot drinks, food, pastries, toys, Christmas ornaments, wooden carvings, art pieces, divine jumpers and much more.

The whole square had been transformed into a glowing, festive attraction where you can’t help but be swept up in the Christmas spirit and desire to want to purchase, eat and find that adorable keep sake to treasure.

We got ourselves a Gluhwein which wasn’t as sweet as I would like but the most precious cups with Salzburg markets written on them certainly made up for the bitterness. (But we have also discovered that Austrian’s love their bitter drinks hence the Campari drinks they all love so much).

We also tried the Krapfen with sauerkraut and cheese and it was yummy. The pastry was a fried Doug (like a donut but savoury with the sauerkraut and anything with cheese is always a winner.

Then we needed something sweet to finish off and we tried a vanilla Schneeball. Which is a round ball shaped pastry and tastes like biscuits all combined together with a touch of vanilla. We both loved it and I was really trying to understand if one person would eat the whole thing themselves as they were huge! Bigger than a tennis ball.

We wandered the markets and took in the sights and let ourselves take our time to just admire the Christmas decorations, browse the stalls of food and drink, and fully immerse ourselves in the festive atmosphere.
