The coldest swim I have ever experienced at Lake Waldbad Anif Naturbad

It was going to be another deliciously hot sunny day in Salzburg and the kids were organising family day and they found a wonderful lake to go called “Lake Waldbad”.

We took the 160 bus from the Kaiser Building out to Waldbad (40 minute trip) and then there was a 15 minute walk to get to the lake.

There were volleyball nets set up, a cable wake boarding course, a cafe/ restaurant and then a pier around a section of the lake. This is where everyone was sun baking and relaxing and taking in the weather.

We had brought our volleyball with us and headed straight to the nets. Right beside us were some very experienced players and as we are complete novices they had a fabulous time fetching our ball for us.

Jessy has a killer strength to all her returns and Ben loves to get the ball high, Daniel is perfecting his 2 handed returns and I am still trying to perfect a 2 handed return. We are messy and rarely get into a rally but its fun and Volleyball is very popular in Salzburg with nets in all the parks and this is a sport all of us enjoy so I’m sure with practice we will get better.

We had no idea that the water would be so cold. When I say cold I mean freezing very close to an ice bath. Daniel was of course straight in and he went up to his knees and the ran out of the water and then decided to just dive in and once he was under he immediately came out. He kept this up for a while and eventually jumped off the high deck and was loving how cold the water was.

Jess and I had to see if all the fuss was actually true and it was. I managed to get in up to my thighs and then Jess decided to push me in, otherwise believe me I wouldn’t have been game and the temperature of the water took my breath away. The shock felt like I couldn’t tell if the water was hot or cold, it was that extreme, and I thought I would just swim around and warm up but it doesn’t work that way in freezing water so I really couldn’t stay in very long.

The water was crystal clear and very relaxing to spend some time on the pier people watching and feeding the ducks and the trout fish.

Lunch was burgers and chips for the kids and Ben and I tried Currywurst - hmmmm I was not a fan but Ben ate the dish and enjoyed it. Essentially it is curried sausages with chips.

We all had a lovely day out by the lake and our swim will be memorable as the coldest to date.
