Keltenblitz Summer Toboggan Run - Durrnberg (near Hallein)

We went to Durrenberg to try the longest Toboggan Run - being 2.2km.

We took the R3 train to Hallein then the 41 bus to Durenberg - all up just over and hour.

I don’t what I loved more the chairlift ride up the hill to get to the top of the tabogganning or the taboggan itself, both were awesome.

The chairlift was so long and high and felt very steep in some parts. They were the open skiing chairlifts so you were dangling your legs and rocking the carriage and planning if we jumped would we survive and we decided it would be a case of a broken leg and minor damage.

The ride took around 15 minutes to the top.

And the view was spectacular on the way up and panoramic at the top.

There was a gnome walk we decided to go on and no sooner had we hit the path that Jessy was screaming and running saying she had seen a snake. Of course Ben went to try and find it but it had already slithered away, I thought we were done for and Jess would want to go back but she kept waking and there were no more encounters. The walk took us to a pretty view of the Alps then we walked back up have some drinks and a bite to eat at the restaurant.

It was so pretty with flowers on all the tables and greenery throughout and then overlooking the valley and the enormous Alps.

After we were replenished we wandered to the line of the tabbogan. When it was out turn we went on the green light and began zooming down the hill. It actually was brilliant, some bits were so steep you had to break and others zoomed through the valley, under bridges you didn’t know which direction you were going to go (apart from down) it was exhilarating. It felt like you were racing for ages and your the adrenalin rush (max speed of 40km/ hour).

I kept getting side tracked by such and impressive scene on the way down of the view of the valley, the forest, the track and the whole mountain as well as not having a clue which was it will twist and turn and one bit felt like a roller coaster.

We all loved it and want to make one in Australia.

That night Ben and I headed out for dinner to a traditional Austrian restaurant called “Krimpelstatter” where the serving sizes were huge, the wine was delicious and the food so memorable. Our new favourite wine is the Zweigelt (a red wine that is so easy to drink and tastes like spices, blackberry and plum flavours without that full body hit). The meze share plate was fantastic and we were overwhelmed at the size of it as we could have just had that for dinner with every cheese, pickle, krautsalad and slice of meat you could want as well as spreads and pate and other condiments to compliment the plate. Our mains were Kodelplatte (a collection of dumplings filled with meat and crackle on a bed of onions and gravy) and Beiried in Rahmsauce mit Spätzle which was beef in gravy with salad and small dough balls. Wonderful evening out.
