Riding to Bergheim

The sun is out and it is a balmy 15 degrees, it feels warmer and looks warmer and there is so much more activity in the city. All the tourists are out and about and the bikes are back in full force. Groups of riders everywhere all in their matching lycra riding suits powering along the cycleways. I could see myself purchasing one of those sexy outfits and riding in it too, they must be really comfortable and have padding where needed so I think its a plan!

We decided to see what Bergheim was like as the number 21 bus that goes direct to Bergheim leaves right outside our apartment and we have never caught the bus all the way there but we decided to ride instead and it was a beautiful ride.

We went past the canals that last we rode past were part frozen and covered in snow now flowing freely again and the banks green with shoots of lavender and daffodils coming through.

The ride was easy and along the path and in 20 minutes we were at what we thought was Bergheim but it really wasn’t sign posted very well so of course what do I do but ask a random stranger for help and she was so nice and her English was great. She directed us where to ride (we wouldn’t not have gone that way either as it was off the normal path) and so we entered the traffic on the road and had fun weaving around the passing cars.

The first thing I noticed when we got the town was the huge Bakery and I mean massive! As it was a Sunday it wasn’t open but I am 100% going back to see what delicious treats and pastries they have to fill a store that large.

We wanted to see the Maria Plain Basilica church up on the hill which is meant to be really decorative but that was closed to, so we wandered around the tomb stones which made me contemplate how short life really is and how I want to travel more.

Onwards and upward we ventured up a hill along the path and at the top it opened up to an expansive view of the town and in the distance was the castle with the back drop of the Alps, it really took our breath away. We have seen some stunning views but the greenery of the paddocks with the blue sky and the alps with the snow on the tips and the castle in the foreground was just precious. I tried to capture the view but we were facing into the sun so it just doesn’t do it justice but its a stand out perspective I will remember.

The ride back to Salzburg was cruisy and Ben surprised me that he had packed a picnic rug in his side saddle and some snacks and so we found a nice spot down by the Salzach and just soaked up the sun.
