Kurzzeitmiete Apartment
We are now officially househunters international and need to find a place to stay for the interim when we touch down.
The most obvious choice of where to book is Airbnb but that is not where we ended up booking.
Ben has been in contact with some real estate agents in Salzburg just to find out criteria about some properties they have for rent and one agent told us about ‘Kurzzeit Miete” a short term booking platform for properties in Austria.
We selected 4 properties we liked
(a) Red Central apartment – that was in old town and had a roof terrace and good price.
(b) Modern flat also in the centre that was very close to everything but the most expensive
(c) Spacious flat - 10 minute walk to old town
(d) 4 Room apartment in the Schallamoos, very central location and good price.
The way you book these properties is you need to put an enquiry in and then a timer counts down 13 hours in which time the lessor can get back to you. If the Lessor does not get back to you in this time then it says you are unsuccessful.
In Austria there is a time difference which is opposite to ours (their 9am is our 7pm). We put through 2 enquiries (one for the red central apartment and the other for the modern flat). 1 of these expired and we got quite anxious as all the Airbnb apartments we were also looking at were booking up fast. Our choices were limited. We were waiting on the one we thought we wanted ‘called the red apartment’ with a roof top terrace but they were not responding so we gave up on waiting and took a chance and sent an enquiry through for the inner city apartment. We said we would leave it up to fate and whichever one got back to us first, that is the one we would select. The 4 room apartment in the Schallamoos got back to us first so we booked it.
Little did we know the Salzburg Festival was on and this was peak period. We knew it was peak because of the Summer Season but we found out a festival of classical music is also held in the 6 weeks. So our original plan was to sign a lease for 30 days, however we were told we needed to sign a lease agreement for 45 days and we not knowing if we would get another place in a central location for the time we wanted we decided to book the 45 days and pay the deposit in Euros and we are now going to be living in an inner city apartment. The price to book for 45 days was $6,400 Euros.
Who knows which one would be better but that is the one we have picked and I am nervous and excited at the same time to live (a) in the city and (b) in an apartment rather than on acreage but I just don’t know. There is one thing to make a plan and fantsise about what it may be like and quite another to actually do it. Yes it is liberating but it is also very uncomfortable and if you are like me that analyses and questions and deliberates on what if and what could be an outcomes not knowing anything about Austria other than the areas I have researched it is daunting.
This is a 4 room apartment that we have selected is a 5 minutes walk into the heart of the city and. a 10 minute walk to the Sa
